(Honoring two great Balinese dance and gamelan teacher)
So impressive … !!
Written by: a young Balinese gamelan musician from Peliatan
Few years ago, on August 26, 2007, the Regent of Gianyar Regency, Mr. Anak Agung Gde Agung Bharata has officially opened Photo Documentary Exhibition and Cultural Event, honoring two great Balinese dance and gamelan teacher, “Mengenang Sang Guru – A Tribute to Anak Agung Gde Mandera and Gusti Made Sengong”. Held in Peliatan village, Ubud, Bali.
25 January 2007, as a representative of gamelan group from younger generation, I was invited to join a meeting by Peliatan dancers. Pupils, who had the great opportunity being trained by Anak Agung Mandera and Gusti Biang Sengog in the past, wish to show their sincere love, gratitude and thanks for the best time and experiences received during the process of learning and performing, by arranging a very special event as a tribute to both great teachers.

One of the characteristics of these maestro is the style, known as “Peliatan style”, which is still in existence and become one of the Balinese dance repertoire, especially the Legong dance.
Long before the inception of this staging ideas, I was invited to attend a meeting by one of the Peliatan dancers. I was invited in my capacity as representative of the group or Sekaa of the younger generation. Arriving at Balerung stage, venue for this meeting, I saw the participants who attended were those of the disciples of five generations, the period of the 1950s until the 1970s. Things that caught my attention when it is listening to their conversations, their past memory remembering how they were educated, nurtured, reached the stage of their first show on the international.
It is an extraordinary devotion!
From the results of these talks got an idea to think back to “The Master Teachers” and the dancers and musicians, who has been a boon to the village and even the state and as a form of expression of respect, affection, and gratitude, through a series of classical Bali dance performances and instrumental. “MENGENANG SANG GURU – A Tribute to Anak Agung Gde Mandera and Gusti Made Sengog”
